The NISEI PORTFOLIO consists of images curated from the Nisei of Hawai‘i collection, which is comprised of nearly 200 images of the Nisei (second generation Japanese Americans) of Hawai‘i.
The collection is the culmination of a 9 year-long project, begun in 2002, to photographically document this unique generation who distinguished themselves in many fields of endeavor, and whose accomplishments not only directed Hawai`i’s future, but also benefited citizens worldwide.
In 2007, 58 portraits were culled from this collection to create an exhibition entitled, "GOKURŌSAMA Contemporary Photographs of the Nisei in Hawai‘i", which debuted at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i. This was followed by showings at various venues in Hawai‘i and the mainland U.S., including at the Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles, in 2009.
